Frequently asked questions

Your questions about custom membership cards

Practical answers to help you prepare and roll out a membership card programme with confidence.

What is the minimum order quantity for membership cards?

Our standard minimum order is 50 cards. This covers both uniform designs and personalised cards carrying a photo, name, member number or tier label. For organisations issuing cards in smaller batches throughout the year, we can also plan recurring production β€” mention it in your quote request and we will propose a schedule that fits your renewal cycle.

Can each membership card include a member photo?

Yes. Photo personalisation is one of the most common requests for membership cards. Provide a structured file (CSV or Excel) with member data and a linked folder of individual photos. We check image resolution and cropping consistency before production so that every card meets the same quality standard.

What is the difference between RFID, NFC, magnetic stripe and chip cards for access control?

RFID is the general contactless technology used at gates and turnstiles, typically with Mifare or EM standards. NFC is a short-range variant compatible with smartphones, useful for hybrid physical and digital membership systems. Magnetic stripe suits legacy swipe readers. Contact chip cards require insertion into a reader and are used for more secure authentication scenarios. The right choice depends on your existing access hardware.

Can i print different tiers such as gold, silver or VIP on the same order?

Yes. Membership programmes often require distinct card designs per tier. We can print several visual variations within a single order β€” for example a Silver card, a Gold card with hot foil stamping and a VIP card with spot UV varnish β€” and deliver them organised by tier. Tier differentiation is one of the strongest levers for reinforcing perceived member value.

Which material lasts the longest for a multi-year membership?

Standard PVC 0.76 mm is the reference for most membership programmes and comfortably handles 2 to 5 years of wallet use. For memberships exposed to more intensive handling β€” gyms, sports clubs, cards used daily at turnstiles β€” composite PVC offers higher resistance to bending, temperature and repeated flexing. Lamination (gloss or matte) further protects the print surface.

What image format and resolution should member photos be provided in?

Member photos should be supplied as individual JPEG or PNG files, with a minimum resolution of 300 dpi at the final printed size (approximately 400 Γ— 500 px for a standard card photo zone). A consistent crop β€” portrait orientation, shoulders included, plain background β€” produces the most professional result across the entire batch. Each photo file should be named after the corresponding member ID in your data file, so we can match them automatically during personalisation.

Will i see a sample card with real member data before full production?

Yes. For every membership card order we prepare a digital proof at no extra cost, and for projects with variable data we go one step further: a physical or high-resolution sample card is generated using real member data (photo, name, number, tier label) so you can validate the final rendering in context. Full production only starts once you approve this sample β€” no cards are printed without your explicit sign-off.

Can cards be pre-sorted or delivered individually to each member?

Yes. For organisations distributing cards individually β€” annual renewals, new-member onboarding, tier upgrades β€” we can sort the batch by member ID, alphabetical order or tier before dispatch. We can also envelope each card separately with the member's name printed on the envelope for direct distribution at a meeting, an event or by post. Base production runs 6 to 10 working days from proof approval, with express 2-4 day windows available. Delivery covers Europe and the UK with tracked shipping, and international dispatch is arranged on request.

Can your team design the membership card if we don't have artwork?

Yes. Two routes are available. Template adaptation β€” share your association or club identity, member data structure and tier hierarchy, and we adapt an existing membership card template to your brand. Full custom design β€” our in-house designers create the membership card from scratch including photo zones, tier variants (Standard, Gold, VIP) and access encoding visuals, with two revision rounds. Both routes are priced alongside the print order in a single tailored quotation.

Who issues membership cards

A card that proves belonging across every sector

From local associations to national networks β€” membership cards confirm identity, grant access and reinforce organisational belonging.

Gyms & fitness clubs

Access cards for gyms, fitness chains, boutique studios and sports clubs β€” with RFID or NFC compatible with gate and turnstile systems.

Associations & non-profits

Identification cards for members of associations, federations, chambers, unions and non-profit organisations renewing annually.

Museums & cultural venues

Annual pass cards for museums, galleries, theatres, concert halls and cultural foundations β€” often combined with tiered benefit levels.

Coworking & private clubs

Access and identity cards for coworking spaces, business clubs, networking organisations and private members-only venues.

Custom membership card printing

Membership cards that identify, authorise and represent your organisation

Custom membership cards sit at the intersection of identification, access control and brand expression. Unlike a promotional card, a membership card certifies that its holder belongs to an organisation and is authorised to benefit from specific rights β€” visiting a museum, entering a gym, using a coworking space, attending association meetings or accessing reserved services. Lumacards produces PVC membership cards at the ISO 7810 standard (85.6 Γ— 54 mm, 0.76 mm PVC) with full variable data personalisation from 50 cards. Available options include member photo printing, sequential member numbering, validity dates, tier labels and access encoding via RFID, NFC, magnetic stripe or contact chip.

Finishing choices reinforce the symbolic value of the card. Gloss or matte lamination protects it against daily wear, spot UV varnish highlights institutional logos and hot foil stamping differentiates Gold, Platinum or VIP tiers from standard members. For organisations that also need student cards, loyalty cards, smart cards or badge holders, all products can be ordered together in a coordinated project β€” useful for new-member welcome packs, event registration kits or annual renewal campaigns.
